Persuasive Message

LETTER 1: Persuasive Message

My first task was to contact a community partner and offer them a chance to work with IUPUI students, who would provide them with a recommendation report at the end of 10 weeks.

None of the clients to whom I reached out responded, so all documents have been modeled after the first organization I contacted, Rusty Quill, Ltd.

Subject: Free Consultation Opportunity (Time-Sensitive)

Dear Anil Godigamuwe:

Rusty Quill, Ltd. is invited to partner with a team of IUPUI student consultants as we embark on a 10-week project to analyze one of your challenges, explore industry standards and best practices, and provide you with a recommendation report at the end of the process. All you have to do to accept is say yes and name a topic!

Background: Consultant Team and Previous Partners

By accepting this offer, you would be giving a diverse group of motivated and creative university students the unique opportunity to experience a sample of work in the business world in a controlled environment, while also receiving a compilation of dedicated research that aims to further bolster Rusty Quill’s reach and community impact.

Every year, IUPUI students who take the W231 professional writing course reach out to a variety of community partners, and those voted upon by the class receive a recommendation report from the team of students working with them.

Clients for this project in former semesters include the Indiana State Museum, St. Vincent, and the NBA Pacers. You can view a few previous recommendation reports here: Micro-ePortfolios in W231 Professional Writing Skills: Project-Based Learning Showcase: 2021 Showcase: Showcase: Institute for Engaged Learning Get Engaged: IUPUI

Process: Electing Partners and Compiling a Report

Please note that this is a competitive process- there are 25 students in our professional writing class, and only 5 project opportunities, leaving each community partner with a 20% chance of being elected as a finalist. The entire class will be taking a vote for which community partners we will be working with; I will advocate for the library as best I can.

If the company is chosen, a team of 4-5 students will invest approximately 200 hours over the course of 10 weeks to:

  • Explore and analyze your chosen topic

  • Conduct market research (including a local study) and summarize it in a 4-page review of literature

  • Present our findings to you in a recommendation report

If you are interested, just respond and name a topic!

In order for the candidates to be finalized before the voting occurs, I will need a response by February 4th. Should you have any questions for our instructor, Deborah Oesch-Minor, you can contact her at djoeschm@iu.edu, and I will be following up by February 3rd.

Your response is eagerly awaited!

Respectfully yours,

Tony Prabhu-Hensley (it/he/they)
